Ancient Effigy Pipes

Jul/08/2010 - Jul/08/2010
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Vincas Steponaitis entitled “Ancient Effigy Pipes of the Lower Mississippi Valley” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Large effigy pipes, fashioned to depict supernatural creatures and humans in crouching poses, have been discovered in a number of archaeological sites dating to the Mississippi Period (A.D. 1000-1500). In the Natchez area, effigy pipes are known from the Grand Village and Emerald Mound. Most of these effigy pipes are made from stone and Steponaitis has determined that many of the pipes found in the Lower Mississippi Valley are made from limestone that outcrops near Vicksburg, known to geologists as Glendon Limestone. The effigy pipes probably played a role in prehistoric religious beliefs and practices.

A frequent visitor to the Natchez area, Vincas Steponaitis has conducted archaeological investigations in the region for over thirty-five years. He is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Research Laboratories at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is past president of the Society for American Archaeology and the Southeastern Archaeological Conference and past chairman of the board for the Archaeological Conservancy. His interests are wide-ranging and include pre-colonial Indian cultures of the American South, analysis of ancient ceramics, and colonial period maps. His books include Ceramics, Chronology, and Community Patterns: An Archaeological Study at Moundville and Archaeology of the Moundville Chiefdom, co-edited with Vernon J. Knight.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining talk. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
