Archaeology of two Battlefields

Oct/14/2010 - Oct/14/2010
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Jessica Crawford entitled "Protecting the Territory: General F. L. Claiborne, the Mississippi Territorial Militia and the Archaeology of Two Battlefields" in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2010.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Jessica Fleming Crawford is the Southeastern Regional Director for the Archaeological Conservancy, a nationwide non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and preserving archaeological sites. Through her efforts, the Conservancy has purchased numerous sites in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, saving some of these sites from destruction. Crawford received her M. A. degree in anthropology from the University of Mississippi and has worked on archaeological excavations with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Arkansas Archaeological Survey, and the University of Mississippi.

Crawford’s talk will focus on the aftermath of the 1813 Fort Mims massacre that took place near Mobile, Alabama, during the Red Stick War. To avenge the Fort Mims victims, a militia force including Choctaw warriors commanded by General Ferdinand Leigh Claiborne attacked the Red Stick fighters at a village on the Alabama River known as Holy Ground. Fort Mims is now an Alabama State Park and the Archaeological Conservancy recently began efforts to purchase the Holy Ground site. This talk will discuss the archaeological research conducted at the two sites and the role of General Claiborne and the soldiers of the Territorial Militia in these two battles.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining talk. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
