Mar/24/2011 - Mar/24/2011
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Keith Baca entitled "Mississippi’s Native American Place Names" in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2011. Admission is free and seating is limited.

Baca will discuss his book Native American Place Names in Mississippi (University Press of Mississippi, 2007), the first published comprehensive work on the subject. Hundreds of locations in Mississippi bear the fascinating and evocative names bestowed by the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and other tribes. However, the origins and meanings of these names are unknown to most people. In his presentation, Baca will detail the translations for numerous Indian place names, both famous and obscure; correct some popular misconceptions, and discuss Indian history, legends, and myths associated with many of these places.

An archaeologist and research associate with the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University, Baca conducts archaeological surveys and excavations for the Institute’s cultural resource management contract program. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in archaeology at Mississippi State University. As an undergraduate he participated in the Cobb Institute’s Lahav Research Project at Tel Halif, Israel. He has worked as an archaeologist with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District. In addition to his book, Baca is the author of the award-winning booklet Indian Mounds of Mississippi: A Visitor’s Guide and he has published numerous journal articles.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining talk. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
