Spanish Natchez - Illustrated

May/19/2011 - May/19/2011
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated program by Christian Pinnen entitled “Braving Empire: Spanish Natchez and the Atlantic World, 1779-1798” on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

The Grand Village is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Boulevard, one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 61 South in Natchez.

Christian Pinnen is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). He is writing his dissertation on the development of slavery in the Natchez District. He received an M.A. in history from USM after completing North American studies at the University of Bonn and University of Cologne in Germany. He has received fellowships and awards from the University of Texas at Austin, the German Historical Institute of Washington DC, and Louisiana State University.

According to Pinnen, the Spanish period at Natchez deserves wider study. The people that rose to prominence during the years 1779-1798 were instrumental in shaping the region during the first half of the nineteenth century. Pinnen’s studies go beyond the wealthy planters to examine the people who arrived in Natchez during the Spanish period – both free and enslaved. Through legal records, journals, and letters, Pinnen recovers the faint voices of these individuals. The Spanish period was also a time when the Natchez area witnessed the last years of competition for North American empire between the Spanish, French, English, and newly created United States.

This will be a fascinating program. Please make plans to attend. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
