Mother’s Day Open House

May/08/2011 - May/08/2011
Location: William Johnson House - 210 State Street

Natchez National Historical Park staff would like to welcome all mothers to visit the William Johnson House on Sunday, May 8, 2011. In celebration of the day, all mothers will have the chance to enter a drawing to win a copy of William Johnson’s Diary, William Johnson’s Natchez.

The diaries of Johnson cover sixteen years of his life beginning in 1835 and ending with his death in 1851. Entries detail his business affairs, hunting and fishing trips, buying and selling goods at local auctions, gambling at horse races, and raising his family. In addition, Johnson noted town activities such as parades, fires, natural disasters, political rallies, and daily events.

The William Johnson House is a free site open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Although William Johnson was born a slave, he was freed at age eleven and later became a successful businessman, slaveholder, and diarist in Natchez. Visitors to the site will be able to see the actual family home furnished with many of the families original furnishings, listen to Johnson’s diary entries, view a variety of interactive exhibits in the visitor center, and shop in the park’s bookstore.

The William Johnson House, located at 210 State Street. For more information or a schedule of activities, please call 601-446-5790 or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/natc under “schedule of events.”
