Archaeology In Israel

Jun/16/2011 - Jun/16/2011
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Richard Wood entitled “Archaeology in Israel” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2011.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Richard Wood is currently the pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Natchez, where he has been since September of 2009. He has archaeological experience in Israel at two sites: Tel Dor and Capernaum. With Indiana University, he has worked on archaeological sites in southern Indiana. Woods holds degrees from the University of South Carolina (B.S. in Chemistry), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity), and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky (Th.M. and Ph.D. both in Old Testament Studies). He is a member of American Schools of Oriental Research and Society of Biblical Literature and has presented numerous professional papers at national and regional society meetings.

Tel Dor, on Israel’s Mediterranean coast, was occupied for three thousand years by a succession of nationalities, including Canaanites, Israelites, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans. Capernaum, founded in the second century BC, has been the focus of archaeological investigations since the nineteenth century. Wood will talk about his experiences excavating these two sites and will discuss changing ideas about how they relate to biblical writings.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining talk.

Light refreshments will be served.
