Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Samuel O. Brookes III entitled “Birds in Southeastern Indian Art and Archaeology” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Funding assistance for this program is provided by the Mississippi Humanities Council.

A native of Virginia, Brookes obtained his BA and MA degrees in Anthropology from the University of Mississippi. He worked as an archaeologist with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from 1972 – 1985 and with the Vicksburg Corps of Engineers from 1985 – 1987. From 1987 until 2011, he was Chief Archaeologist of the National Forests in Mississippi. Brookes has conducted fieldwork in Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. His publications include two monographs and over 25 journal articles on Mississippi archaeology. Recently retired, he does consulting work in archaeology.

Perhaps because of their ability to fly and thus transcend the worlds of the land and sky, birds played a powerful role in the spiritual lives of American Indians. Across the Southeast, archaeologists have discovered depictions of birds on prehistoric Indian pottery, shells, and copper plates. The images include realistic illustrations of hawks, turkeys, and woodpeckers, as well as representations of mythical creatures such as bird-like humans and flying serpents. Brookes will show examples of this artwork from America’s past and discuss the prehistoric cultures that created the iconic images.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
