Archaeological Investigations at the Feltus Mounds

Jun/21/2012 - Jun/21/2012
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Meg Kassabaum entitled “The 2012 Archaeological Investigations at the Feltus Mounds” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Kassabaum is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and got her start in archaeology at age 15 working at the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois. She received BA degrees in Philosophy and Anthropology from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, and she is currently a PhD candidate in Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Feltus site in southern Jefferson County is the subject of her dissertation. She has recently published journal articles on prehistoric burial practices and mound building.

Since 2006, Kassabaum has participated in archaeological investigations at the Feltus site as part of a long-term project by the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina. Archaeological evidence gathered thus far indicates construction and use of the Feltus mounds during the period AD 750-1200. Based upon the analysis of pottery and animal bones found at the site, Kassabaum believes that the Indians who built the mounds may have gathered there periodically for feasting. In her program, she will talk about how the mounds may have been used and summarize the results of this summer’s excavations.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
