The Mississippi Mound Trail

May/24/2012 - May/24/2012
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Pamela Edwards Lieb entitled “The Mississippi Mound Trail: Preserving a Resource and Promoting Heritage Tourism” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012. Admission is free and seating is limited.

Lieb is Chief Archaeologist for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, she obtained her BA in Anthropology from the University of Memphis. In 2003 she received her MA in Anthropology from the University of Mississippi. Before coming to work for the Department of Archives and History, she worked as collections manager for the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University. She has served on the editorial board of the Archaeological Conservancy’s magazine American Archaeology and currently serves as statewide coordinator for Archaeology Month in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Mound Trail is a driving tour of some of the state’s most significant Indian mound sites. The trail will link publically owned properties such as the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians and Winterville Mounds with mounds on private property that can be seen from the road. The Lower Mississippi Valley was home to mound building societies for thousands of years. The Mississippi Mound trail will respond to the public’s desire to learn more about these ancient civilizations and help promote the preservation of archaeological sites among private landowners.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two).

This will be an informative and entertaining program. Light refreshments will be served.
