1962 Excavations at the Fatherland Site

Jul/12/2012 - Jul/12/2012
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Joseph V. “Smokye” Frank entitled “The 1962 Archaeological Investigations at the Fatherland Site (The Grand Village of the Natchez)” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Fifty years ago this summer, Natchez native Smokye Joe Frank participated in the archaeological dig at the Grand Village led by Robert S. Neitzel, then chief museum curator for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The excavation provided the material for Neitzel’s landmark 1965 report, Archaeology of the Fatherland Site: The Grand Village of the Natchez, published by the American Museum of Natural History. Neitzel’s team uncovered the remains of the Natchez mounds and sacred structures described in numerous colonial narratives, which eventually resulted in the state’s acquisition and development of the National Historic Landmark property.

Frank received his BA in anthropology and history and MA in social science at Northwestern Louisiana State University. He is a longtime associate of a group of archaeologists known as the “Lower Mississippi Survey” and he has participated in numerous excavations in Louisiana and Mississippi. In 2005, the Mississippi Archaeological Association presented Frank with the Calvin Brown Award for his outstanding, lifetime commitment to archaeology.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
