Archaeology Program Series

Feb/28/2013 - Feb/28/2013
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by John O’Hear entitled “The Mississippi Mound Trail and Natchez Area Archaeology Research” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Formerly an archaeologist at Mississippi State University, O’Hear is currently serving as director of the Mississippi Mound Trail Project. His archaeological fieldwork experience includes investigations in the southeastern United States, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Jordan, and Israel. Meg Kassabaum and Erin Nelson, archaeologists with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will assist with the presentation. The archaeologists are visiting mounds in the Natchez area that will become part of the Mississippi Mound Trail.

In the current phase of the trail development, archaeologists are making use of exciting new LiDAR technology to obtain accurate maps of mound sites in western Mississippi. O’Hear will explain how LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is contributing to the project. The Mississippi Mound Trail Project is a concerted tourism effort by numerous agencies and groups, including the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Lower Delta Partnership, several American Indian tribes, Mississippi Department of Transportation, the Archaeological Conservancy, U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and various Mississippi counties.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program. Light refreshments will be served. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
