Windsor Ruins Excavation

May/30/2013 - May/30/2013
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Sara Hahn entitled “Recent Excavations at Windsor Ruins and Other Interesting Things” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013. Admission is free and seating is limited.

Hahn has worked at Coastal Environments, Inc., in Baton Rouge for the past 17 years as both an archaeologist and historian. Most of her work focuses on the excavation of historic archaeological sites and recording and evaluating historic structures in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Over the years, she has participated in several projects in the Natchez area including the Natchez Bluffs Stabilization Project.

This past January, Hahn conducted archaeological excavations at Windsor Ruins in Claiborne County. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History owns Windsor Ruins and the investigations were funded by Entergy Mississippi. Hahn’s work exposed for the first time the massive below-ground footings that support Windsor’s iconic columns. Made of brick, the footings comprise a continuous underground chain wall that was constructed before the columns were erected. The study of the column footings is part of an effort by the Department of Archives and History to stabilize the columns and protect them against weathering. Hahn has also been conducting research on the antebellum ceramic importers of New Orleans and she will provide a brief update on this work following her Windsor discussion.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Blvd., Natchez, Mississippi.
