Great Discoveries in Chickasaw Archaeology

Jun/20/2013 - Jun/20/2013
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Brad R. Lieb entitled “Great Discoveries in Chickasaw Archaeology, 1935-2012” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013. Admission is free and seating is limited.

Lieb is a Mississippi native and serves as Special Assistant in Cultural Affairs for the Chickasaw Nation. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Anthropology from the University of Alabama, focusing his studies on the close relationship between the Chickasaws and the Natchez Indians. In 2006, the Chickasaw Nation presented Lieb with its Heritage Preservation Award, recognizing his research on Chickasaw archaeology and history.

Tupelo, Mississippi, is located on the site of the eighteenth-century Chickasaw villages, known as “Chickasaw Old Fields.” Removal to Indian lands in the West forced the Chickasaws to abandon their villages in 1837, opening up the lucrative location on the Natchez Trace for Anglo-American settlement. The subsequent development of Tupelo’s city streets and neighborhoods brought destruction to numerous Chickasaw village sites. Unfortunately, the Chickasaw custom of burying their dead beneath the floors of their houses meant the loss tribal cemeteries as well. Since the 1930s, archaeologists have endeavored to preserve the evidence of the historic Chickasaw communities. Under Lieb’s leadership, the Chickasaw Nation has intensified these archaeological investigations in recent years.

We urge everyone to come and bring a friend (or two). This will be an informative and entertaining program.

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Blvd., Natchez, Mississippi.
