A Remarkable French-Atlantic Voyage

Aug/08/2013 - Aug/08/2013
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

At 6:30 p.m. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated program by Erin M. Greenwald entitled “A Company Man: The Remarkable French-Atlantic Voyage of a Clerk for the Company of the Indies” on Thursday, August 8, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Admission is free and seating is limited. The Grand Village is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Boulevard, one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 61 South in Natchez.

Greenwald’s program is about the publication of a rare and uncensored memoir by Marc-Antoine Caillot, a clerk for the Company of the Indies, who was in French Louisiana in 1729. The memoir, published this year, is the latest title from The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC). Greenwald, curator and historian at THNOC, edited the book and will sign copies following her talk. She has also recently curated an exhibition at THNOC entitled Pipe Dreams: Louisiana under the French Company of the Indies, 1717-1731. She received BA degrees in French and German from Tulane University, and earned MA degrees in French and History, as well as a PhD in History from Ohio State University.

Caillot’s illustrated memoir describes life in New Orleans when the French colonial town was only ten years old. The clerk was on hand to assist the survivors of the Natchez Massacre and participate in the earliest documented Carnival celebration in New Orleans. Greenwald notes that the memoir, kept in a French convent for over a century, “was never subjected to censorship by the company or king.” According to THNOC, nuns brought Caillot’s manuscript to Canada in 1939. After its acquisition by THNOC in 2004, Greenwald spent several years investigating the document and its author.

This will be a fascinating program. Please make plans to attend.
