1st Great Mississippi Flood of 1927

Sep/05/2013 - Sep/05/2013
Location: Vidalia Library

This is the first of three discussions about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and how it changed America.

Georgiann Potts, public humanities scholar, will lead a discussion of three aspects of the Flood of 1927 over three evening, September 5th, 12th and 19th.

Natural disasters come in many forms, nearly all of them familiar to Southerners. Droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms – each brings death, injury financial challenges and despair. Of them all, it might be argued that flood is the most difficult. Waters rise, swelling the rivers beyond their banks, and pushing wildlife and people alike to seek higher ground.

John Berry, author of Rising Tide, carefully examines the roles that nature, politics, and man’s pride played in the historic event of the flood of 1927.
