Serenade in the Cemetery

Apr/27/2014 - Apr/27/2014
Location: Natchez City Cemetery

Join the Natchez City Cemetery Association for its third annual Serenade in the Cemetery, 1:30 - 5 p.m., Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Natchez City Cemetery, 2 Cemetery Road.

Cemetery gates open at 1:30; musical and character presentations begin at 2:00. Stroll through the beautifully landscaped grounds while listening to the fascinating stories of some of the cemetery’s most colorful “residents,” including Jane Johnson of Melrose, the Balfour family of Homewood, and former cemetery director, C. W. Vincent. Learn about the ancient art of dowsing from local historian Don Estes and Victorian customs from storyteller Joan McLemore. Dub Rogers and Sally Durkin will also be on hand to talk about “Get On Up,” the forthcoming James Brown biopic, much of which was filmed in Natchez.

Listen to the music of Father Walton and the Funky Friars, Terry Trovato and piper Darin Parkhill, violinist David Troutman and flautist Debbie Hudson, and harpist Merisha Gore and flautist Robin Rutherford, while enjoying complimentary refreshments.

Beautiful floral arrangements, created especially for Serenade by internationally known designer John Grady Burns, will be on display throughout the cemetery.

Cemetery driving/walking tour CDs and cemetery note cards will be on sale.

New at this year’s Serenade is a photography competition showcasing photos of the Natchez City Cemetery. All contest photographs will be on display from 1:30–5:00 pm, Sunday, April 27th, in the cemetery’s historic Shelter House. Deadline for contest entries is Friday, April 18th, at 5:00 pm. For registration forms and rules, stop by Kimbrell Office Supply, 520 Main St., Natchez, or Mrs. Holder’s Antiques, 636 Franklin St., Natchez, or email
