Dance Styles of Indian Powwow

Apr/24/2014 - Apr/24/2014
Location: Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated program by Dr. Charles “Chuck” Borum entitled ”Dance Styles at a Modern American Indian Powwow” on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Admission is free and seating is limited.

A native of Natchez, Borum has a private Family Medicine practice. He founded the Natchez Powwow in 1989 after participating in powwows in Oklahoma. The first powwow took place at the Natchez fairgrounds and the event moved to the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians the following year. For the past 26 years Borum has partnered with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to present this unique, award-winning public program.

“I became interested in American Indian culture when I was a Boy Scout and I spent my three-year residency at the University of Oklahoma going to every powwow and dance I could get to,” Borum said.

The sights and sounds of a Native American powwow can be overwhelming to spectators who are unfamiliar with the different types of dancing and dress in the dance circle. Likewise, the importance of the drumming and singing, which are so meaningful to the powwow participants, is often lost on the people who come to watch the activities.

Borum will use photographs and video clips to reveal the secrets of the powwow and provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into this celebration of American Indian heritage.
This will be a fascinating program. Please make plans to attend. Call 601-446-6502 for more information.
