Auburn is the very symbol of Southern Antebellum architecture. The pediment portico became synonymous with great mansions of the South. The Auburn portico predates those of the University of Virginia and the White House and may well have been the model on which they were based. Interestingly this symbol of the old South was commissioned and designed by Yankees. Levi Weeks of Massachusetts designed the house for Lyman Harding, also of Massachusetts, who later became the first attorney general of the Mississippi territory and of the State of Mississippi.

The next owner of Auburn was Stephen Duncan of Pennsylvania. Duncan added the side wings, a service building and a billiard hall in the side yard. Duncan a physician, became wealthy as a planter. He was also one of the largest slave holders in the South.

In 1911 the heirs of Auburn deeded Auburn and its 210 acres to the City of Natchez. The grounds surrounding Auburn were developed into a recreational park and golf course. The mansion however in an abandoned state, fell into great disrepair. Many years later with the help of the City of Natchez, and other interested parties, the Auburn Garden Club adopted the mansion and restored it. The ladies of the Auburn Garden Club have devoted over thirty years of service to the preservation of this National Historical Landmark entirely on a volunteer basis.

The most outstanding feature at Auburn is the freestanding spiral staircase in the entry hall of the house. The exquisite stairway rises to the second floor, outlining a complete circle. It is constructed entirely of wood; the hand rail is made of walnut.
