The Civil War prevented the completion of Longwood, a National Historic Landmark constructed 1860-61. Longwood is the largest and most elaborate octagonal house in the United States. Preserved in its incomplete state, the house gives silent and dramatic testimony to the impact of the Civil War upon the planting economy of the South. Longwood has been featured on America's Castles and Bob Vila's Historical Houses.
